Cycling

Cycling in Detroit - For several years now cycling has been gaining interest in Detroit. The Dequindre Cut Greenway is an urban recreational path that opened to the public in May of 2009. The two mile greenway is open to pedestrian and bicycle traffic and provides a link between the east riverfront, Eastern Market and several neighborhoods in between. In 2011, Shinola opened a factory and store in Detroit where they sell bikes in addition to other items. Now, in its seventh season, The Slow Roll is group bicycle ride that meets once a week in Detroit. Their slow pace keeps it safe for all ages and gives riders a unique view of the city. As many Belgians know, cycling was a great source of entertainment for our ancestors with many afternoons spent at the Velodrome. And now, an afternoon at the Velodrome is a reality for us. The Lexus Velodrome opened with two days of racing in January 26th and 27th. Located at 601 Mack Avenue at I-75 in Detroit, it is an inflatable, climate controlled dome that opened for public use on Monday, January 29th. It is only the third of its kind in the United States. They will have designated times for seniors and children and the tracks designer hopes to see many young people come in to enjoy cycling for sport or exercise.
